How to do a vertical turn (backside)?

In today’s explanation, we are going to talk about how to do a vertical turn against the direction of the wave (backside turn).

As we explained earlier, what we need to focus on at the beginning is performing a good bottom, which will allow us to reach the wave’s potential zone vertically, in this case.

Bottom: we must remain well flexed when we start to bottom out and begin to rise towards the part of the wave where we are going to perform the maneuver. It is important to open our inside arm (the one closest to the wall of the wave) and rotate with our shoulders, trying to project our body upwards.

We must vary the flexion and extension depending on the phase we are in.

As I rise, always following with my gaze, I open my torso, looking towards the part of the wave where I am going to perform the maneuver, until I place the board in the position I want. Once we have the board vertical, we have to start rotating, trying to place the tip of our board inward.

To point the tip towards the shore, we have to keep our gaze down until the board responds and turns.

It is important to be aware of shifting your weight correctly. As you rise, try to shift your weight backward so that the board can enter vertically. Once the board is in position, begin to shift your weight forward, placing your hand on the board. Finally, shift your weight backward so that the tip does not dig in and you can exit the maneuver smoothly.
