Are you just getting started in the world of surfing? And do you want to make sure you have everything you need for this new adventure? Then this article is for you. We will explain everything you need to know about the basic equipment you will need to enjoy the waves in Tenerife in a simple and easy way.

1. Your best ally: The surfboard

To embark on this adventure, the board is undoubtedly the most important piece of equipment. Choosing the right surfboard is one of the key steps in your development as a surfer.

Making the right choice can help improve your performance in the waves and make your experience in the water much more enjoyable.

However, there are different types of boards depending on your level and the type of waves you want to surf:

  • Softboard or foam board: This board is ideal for beginners as it offers the perfect combination of buoyancy, stability, and margin for error, making it easier to learn and reducing the risk of injury while surfing.
  • Shortboard: At the next level, we have this board, which is shorter and more maneuverable, perfect for experienced surfers.
  • Longboard: And now we come to a longer, more stable board, ideal for small waves and a more relaxed surfing style.
  • Fish and Funboard: For those looking to diversify their surfing, this is the ideal board.

2. Leash or Invento: Safety in surfing

The leash or cord connects your board to your ankle. This is an essential accessory to prevent your board from drifting away if you fall and for the safety of other surfers. These cords come in various sizes from 6 to 9 feet, so you can choose the one that best suits your style and board.

3. Wetsuit: Your essential accessory

The surf suit, better known as a wetsuit, is really the accessory you can’t do without when you start surfing. One of its features is that it protects you from the cold and helps you stay in the water longer. Wetsuits can be divided into two types: Short-sleeved and short- or long-legged suits, and full suits, which cover the entire body. In addition, their thickness can vary depending on the water temperature

  • 2/2 mm or 3/2 mm: For warm water.
  • 4/3 mm or 5/4 mm: For cold water.
  • 6/5 mm or more: For very cold water.

4. Paraffin or grip: So nothing slips

Good stability and grip are essential when surfing. Paraffin, also known as surf wax, is applied to the board to prevent slipping. Grip pads provide good traction and help keep you stable on the board.

Surf wax must be applied more frequently to maintain the desired grip, whereas traction pads are installed once and do not require re-waxing.

5. Fins: The rudder of your board

What are fins? Fins are the fins on the bottom of the board and affect maneuverability when surfing. But fins are not just for steering, they have two other important functions that are important to know about:

1- They provide stability to the board: If you add a fin to the bottom of the board, you will have something that creates resistance and prevents the tail of your board from skidding when you try to turn.

2- Fins influence speed: When surfing, it is essential to get the edge of the board into the water, as this helps to generate speed and also provides greater grip. This action exerts a lever force on the fins, increasing glide and speed with each pump.

Now you know the different fin configurations:

  • Single Fin: A single fin, most commonly used on longboards.
  • Twin Fin: Two fins, ideal for a looser surf.
  • Thruster (Three fins): This is the most common, as it provides a good balance between stability and maneuverability.
  • Quad Fin (Four fins): This fin provides greater speed and grip in hollow waves.

6. Time to protect your board: Bag or cover

Taking care of your board is one of the most important parts of being a good surfer. Keeping your surfboard in good condition and storing it properly when not in use is undoubtedly important for its longevity and performance. Here are some tools and storage solutions you can consider:

  • Dent repair kit
  • You should have a wax remover to clean your board after surfing.
  • A board rack
  • And without a doubt, one of the most important things is a board bag to keep it safe until your next adventure.

7. Additional accessories that make a difference.

  • You can get a neoprene cap, gloves, and booties: Only if you surf in cold water.
  • A Lycra or UV-protective T-shirt: This will help protect you from the sun and prevent chafing from the board.
  • Wax remover and a wax comb: As mentioned above, these will help keep your board clean for much longer.
  • And to add a nice touch, you can bring a pair of floating sunglasses: These will help protect your eyes from the sun’s glare on the water.

Conclusion

Having the right surfing equipment will allow you to enjoy surfing more and practice it safely. And remember, you don’t need to buy everything at once, but you should make sure you choose what best suits your surfing level and your needs. Now you’re ready to start surfing!
